I suppose this is where the Design Technologist (manufacturer) takes over from the Artist.
I am using CAD / CAM to produce my tooling to ensure uniformity in an otherwise non uniformed building technique. Here I am using a simplified 2D design package and will be outputting to a micro-router to achieve cutting templates and formers to aide slab building and inlay. I intend to move my visualisations onto Solidworks 3D modelling software.
Bringing an engineered approach to my pieces will bring repeatability without the need for slip casting. This technology was not available when I was studying in 1994 and to access it now is exciting giving another dimension to the creative process.
The start of my CAD CAM tooling… ‘Birds on song’ teapot
